Hugh - and others - thanks for the comments. My slight disappointment wasn't caused solely by that puzzle being too simple - it was partly because I'd never had any disappointing puzzles from Vismut! I've always admired her work, her ingenuity etc - and just felt a little short-changed. It was a bit like going to your favourite restaurant, where you've had some fantastic dishes, and having a meal that was ... just OK.

There are other regular setters who often feature simpler puzzles and I am quite happy for those to encourage new solvers (even if I don't enjoy them much myself!). I think this was the first 'simple' Vismut I'd encountered, and I have no qualms about not being a fan of it!

I am always grateful for any puzzle, simple or hard. As one who compiles themselves I know that is actually less fun a a compiler to create a "simpler" puzzle. So hats off to Vismut for putting her ego to one side so that a larger cohort of solvers can experience the joy of getting a full grid and a resolved end game. 👏

As I've had years (decades?) of Vismut puzzles, I'm sure I'll soon back to being delighted with what she gives us.

Yes Hugh, I do agree with you and I’ve said similar myself previously. This was an entirely personal reaction this week because I then felt obliged to do some weeding!

...which after all is said and done is probably a nobler activity than the crafting and solving of wordy things teenieleek. You have inspired me to go and do a bit myself🙂

Just confused by 1d, the only answer I can find, and it seems to parse, are tapeworm, not mammals? Have I got the wrong answer?

Lumen,my answer begins with a T and a quick look (at OneLook) says it's a 'subclass of mammals'.

Hugh and Teeieleek, we have an incursion of ground elder from an untended neighbouring garden, If either or both of you want more opportunities to demonstrate nobility, you would be very welcome to join the fight….

Jack Aubrey, in return you can attempt to eliminate the alstroemeria invasion I have. I once heard someone ask about it on Gardeners’ Question Time. The solution offered was “move house”.

Enjoyed this and have finished, but can't make head or tail of the wordplay in 12d or 34a

Thanks
