Jockie - I just looked up “shiver” out of desperation for some insight and one definition in Merriam-Webster was another word for “shatter”. Other than that, I’m still searching for the 18 letter phrase in the grid.

Ashers, all the 18 letters appear in the grid, but only the first 13 are used, jumbled, in the shape.
The preamble says that some of these are joined diagonally. How could a trail of them fit the shape?
Look also for some letters in the 2 words which don't appear very often in the grid.

I'm with the other 'losers' on this one, finished crossword early on Saturday, but still no idea on the final shape.
'Guess what I'm thinking' is a very apt phrase for this one, despite all the hints.
It's a shame Charybdis didn't want more people to enjoy finishing it. Not to mention getting votes in end of year round-up!

If it's any help, the first letter of the phrase only occurs 4 times in the grid, 2 of these in close proximity.
These are part of the shape.

I've just realised that there are 5 instances of the letter, and that "close proximity" is a tautology ...

I think I’ve got the shape. It wasn’t very satisfying though, and far from easy to find. I may still be proved wrong.

Thank you mattrom. If there are 5 instances of the first letter in the grid then I’ve gone wrong earlier than I thought.
Time to give up.

Correction. I have 5 instances of that but I was ignoring the one in a 2 word thematic phrase.
