This was one of the gentlest for some time, almost a walk through.

Is the updated Spectator App making anyone else's iPhone run unusually hot? Or is it just me?

For some reason the normal 14x14 grid has been abandoned today.

I suspect that may be due to the nature of the wrinkle imposed.

I seem to recall that one of the Speccie compilers is a mathematician by trade. There have certainly been puzzles requiring a tad of knowledge of that area before.

well, I have the grid completed but have no mathematical ability to solve the calculation - am I dealing with 101010111110? And why is 8d "shell" - can't find any reference that works for that ...

ah ... 101010111110 is giving me a 3-letter word that fits the title. Is that all it is? Have no idea ho to do the calculation without googling, though. And 8d still confuses ...
