Thank you Hally, for the hint (but not answer) for 20d. It showed me that my tentative answer for 22a of ‘love a dodo’ was wrong… and all the rest fell into place. I still did not quite understand 22a until I saw it written down!

Regarding 12a "House caught between American-British hate" (5), is the US House of Representatives normally known by its initials?
