Grid filled apart from the two 13-letter things. From the letters I have the author is foreign, and unknown to me. Not sure how to proceed since any list of authors, even if complete, is going to be enormous.

Not foreign. Unclued columns split 10,3 and 7,6

Ah. Was looking for the author in col.1, hence the inference of foreignness. Got the well-known quote, now looking for the last stages.

Why are the clues that give the extra letters PRIME examples?

I haven't seen the crossword, but are the clue numbers primes?

ChrisE, that could be correct - but it's a carte blanche puzzle so there are no known numbers initially. These could come later, of course....

Apropos absolutely nothing, some years ago in a kitchen in Laos I was charged to produce “lemongrass filled with chicken”. I assumed that there was some linguistic misunderstanding and the filling was the other way around. How wrong I was - and how delicious, if technically challenging, is the real thing.

I came to this very late because somebody wanted to park in my boot on Sunday while I was still in the car. (Nobody hurt and metal can be mended.) I have a full grid, changed the 2 letters and highlighted everything but have one question. Are we expected to put in the bars and the numbers?

Sorry to hear that AP but good to know that no-one was hurt. My view as to bars and numbers was “ye didnae ask sae I didnae dae it” - albeit one might have (purely for personal satisfaction) put in numbers to check that primes were, er, primes.
