A good puzzle apart from 13D, which is not really a fair clue, since it does not include a definition of the answer.

Helviticus, re 13d. A ? can indicate that it is an &lit. clue, where the whole clue also serves as the definition.

The Observer site wants me to rotate my device before playing, and the instruction won't go away. Needless to say i wish to print it and solve it in my armchair. Can anyone suggest how to find it. just like in the old days before the silly instruction got in the way?

Cockie, there’s a link to the pdf at the Clue Clinic. If you can’t find it I can repost it here.

Thanks, Scarlett. No idea why they make life difficult. Jono - what is the clue clinic? This old solver aint encountered it. (just for the next time the Observer makes things tricky.)

Cockie, here is the link to the Clue Clinic. It provides technical analysis on Gemelo/Azed puzzles on the day of publication (without giving solutions).

Well up to snuff, I thought. Many excellent clues, my favourite probably being 7d.
