I *think* that I read somewhere that the 6th (unchecked) letter of 8ac is a different vowel from the one commonly used - it comes from the third truncated word describing the way that the "safe arrangement" works. I wonder whether both spellings will be accepted, given the question mark on the end?

4a Announced legal collateral package (4)

Is this a homophone, signalled by “announced”?

I want to write DEED as the answer, based on the word ‘legal’

Druh... Yes to homophone,No to Deed.

The package is a bundle (hay or straw perhaps) and it sounds like the word for 'legal collateral', something that has to be paid while you're free and waiting to be tried....

9d is an awful clue. There's another answer that parses as well and fits the definition better - but not the crossers!

Indeed Chris - I had the 'correct' answer in, which held me up for ages.

Phil, the fuss is two two letter words at the beginning and end, with Republican and school gym lessons in the middle. I found this far more demanding than recent Everymans (Everymen?), and my lateral thinking muscles are exhausted. Good to have a realchallenge (now and then!)
