This is proving to be extremely difficult. Despite having a full grid I am at a lost as to what to do as I cannot parse 9,21,30 or 40 across.

9 has a word to be eliminated, with single letter for last word of clue
21look at last letters of words in clue
30d has word to be eliminated and old word for first of clue rising ('mounting')
40a has word to be eliminated with parsing going 3, 2, 5, 2

It’s all fallen into place, what a fantastic puzzle, with such a satisfying end game. Not being an expert on the subject I needed a little judicious googling, but what a triumph in the end! Superb work by Sauce

A very good crossword indeed. Finding the answer to the question was slightly problematic, but google came to the rescue again. Didn't need to complete the end game step-by-step as it seems obvious (to me at least, but I may be wrong) what to do. Thanks for the nudges Muraria.

Gitto, I'm impressed if you knew what to do without following the instruction. I didn't realise until I'd almost finished. As I said previously, I thought the reveal was very satisfying.

Ozzy, it was just an intuitive guess based on the answer to the question AND the last nine extra words in the clues. So I did what I thought, then checked a few clues to justify it. A lucky PDM which, for me, are quite rare.

Still impressed!

Just stuck on 9a and 10a. Any help appreciated.

Lumen, 9a. Def. is 'border'. Clue has an extra word.
10a. is 'ride', with extra letter, in 'escort' as in date (3), cycling
