To pump is to grill someone and if you remove the p and replace it with a you have puma a beast

I've stopped enjoying these puzzles, partly because the surfaces seem ever more clunky, but mainly because of the way the grid jumps around as you (try and) enter the solutions. Since they split away from the Guardian, I find the online grid so amateurish.

Simon - try messing around with the settings. You can improve (although not entirely eliminate) the jumping cursor.

I agree about the surfaces - some terrible ones this week. And the use of 'roset' smacked of desperation.

Duplicate Thread by Thomas

Do not know whether I am getting better at cryptic crosswords but did today's puzzle really quickly which is not usually the norm, it is usually about of a struggle.

I think Thomas at post #11 has given a spoiler.

Overall, found today rather difficult and I am with Simond9x on the clunkiness of using The Observer interface on my device. It really is a bit of a mess. And I am sure I could adjust settings (again!) if I had a PhD in that sort of thing but cannot face it.

All that said, rather grumpily, I liked 20a, 4d and 7d tells me again that our setter is a tennis fan. We've seen Nadal and Agassi in recent weeks and today's gives another.

Enjoyable, mostly.

COD 26 (well it is mint sauce time!)

Like the link between 16 + 20.

Off topic: as a lad I thought Sherpa was Tensing's Christian🙃 name!

I could not agree more with simond9x. It seems that the first posts every week is someone needing help just to find the crossword on their computer, then all the glitches in using it on screen and the propensity of the setter to include general knowledge clues and phrases rather than truly cryptic clues detract from the pleasure of the puzzle. Since the advent of Tortoise the style is so different that the puzzle hardly deserves to continue the title of Everyman.
Certainly others may disagree with me but I wonder if the Observer has noticed how the number of subscribers to this forum has diminished compared with the years of pre-Tortoise Everymans.
Having got that off my chest I am off to pastures new!

For the first time I can recall, Everyman 4146 is behind the paywall on bot my MacBook and my iPad. Anyone else found this?

In the settings you can turn off the cursor skipping existing letters. I find it irritating too.
