I sense the setter is a tennis fan because of another player anagram.

The primarily has an odd surface, makes me like them even less.

Just over 9 minutes for me, so definitely on the gentler side. I did think most of the surfaces were quite good, other than the two i haven’t parsed yet. As you said, no rhyming pair, but there is a matching pair of another sort. Overall, not taxing but enjoyable Everyman.

I think that 20a needs a US indicator.

I think 19d involves a quirky reversal indicator.

I'm sure that's what was intended Roger, but I can't think of any instance where "shrinking" can mean reverse?

Chambers does give 3 of the definitions of "to shrink" as 'to recoil', 'to draw back, retreat' and 'to withdraw' but I don't think any of those mean the same thing as to turn in the opposite direction.

Maybe someone can add something that will prove me though...
