It looks like JAPERY, but how does it parse?

That’s correct. A is per, as in ten pounds a head, and a jay is slang for an easily duped person.

It’s listed in Chambers as US slang, but Collins is the Times’ recommended reference (I believe), and it’s in there as British English, so I think it’s okay
