The invitation to submit popped up instantly when I completed correctly. But I remember that happening several months ago for one week only before it reverted back to letting the solver decide for themselves (unless I've made mistakes in the last 20 or so puzzles!), so who knows what will happen next week?
For anyone else who was befuddled by the awful syntax in 9a, try this instead: 'Noise from a pen - why it doesn't write'
Agree that the Spoonerism was a cracker.

Agreed, a lovely spoonerism. No problems except I pondered 9a, 8d and 25a for ages until they all dawned at once.
COD 9a

A nice crossword (thanks Everyman) but a pity the Observer have decided to "improve" the online version. The font is awful (has Marco Rubio extended his war on the "Woke" use of sans serif to the Observer - see https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cgkez3367xmo)? I can no longer tab to the next clue on my laptop and it is not possible to print the completed grid. Why change something that works very well?

I tracked down the “Everyman Centenary Jumbo Special” from the paper.
Looks interesting. 25x25 with an unclued “quotation” running around an inner perimeter.
However, solving will need to wait until later.

Stuck on the last one!
25a I have M—R—H—S and L—W
I can guess the last word using the S from the previous word but doesn’t help with overall clue.
Can any one give me a clue?
Thanks

Slang word for a potato gives the rest of the first word. Not in the best of taste.

Okay, thanks chrise. Don’t think I’ve heard that one!

12A - I can see bits and pieces that produce the answer but not the whole lot.

@ HeleninGlos

The anagram fodder comprises the five letters of the second word in the clue, a single letter used four times and a two letter abbreviation for French.

I also found that the old .pdf shortcut didn't work, but online access worked perfectly (on Bing browser).

Excellent puzzle, though difficult for Everyman IMO. I found it tougher to finish than the weekend's Prize, though the Prize had more tricky parsings that I only saw after the grid was filled.

25 was my LOI and COD. Also liked 7, 9, 10 and 19a.
