Kenhiggs, could your E be an R? There's a Marari - butterfish. It's a Maori word, so New Zealand fits. Mar(ch) and A (p) RI (l).

Thank you both. It's the first time that I have attempted this fiendish puzzle. Over an hour and a half so far and only two-thirds of the way!

The “E” came from ESCAPEE, the clue being “Term for one with hasty departure, having run away” (ESCAPE + E)

However, I now see the superior parsing for ESCAPER.
