Quite a few unfamiliar words this week, in both the clued and unclued solutions. A quick Google revealed what was suggested in the preamble, something I was not aware of.

Certainly looks like an error to me. I would have clued it as “Oscar? Amid eccentric stoics he is hardest to please”

It wouldn't be a Listener crossword without some mistake like that - I think they all do it to keep Doc happy.
