Very neat! When the PDM came it did so with a resounding clang. Thank you, Turnstone; a fine debut.

15d I see what you mean. You must have been in the military ...just kidding :-)

And I’ve just learnt that Turnstone sets for the Times Quick as Heron.

Thanks jono, for both bits of info.

The clues seemed to be on the easier end of the spectrum.

I was utterly flabbergasted like many others about the theme etc. I was really focused on one possible entry at 16A which seemed more likely due to all the creative works associated with that entry. But what set me right was realizing how the extra letters paired up. That clearly showed me the solution for 16A. I already had 17D in (was the only possible word) and it was also clear now why this was the answer. I scratched my head a bit on 26A but then it came to me (via google).

Finally ... finally ... all finished now, with the exception of 1D. Any hints, please?

Pendragon, that was also my LOI.
The hybrid is an animal and veteran contains the extra letter which I assume you must know.

Thanks, jono. It didn't help that there's one of those letters that stays. All done now (me too).

As usual, having finished what is a fine example of the Genius ouvre, I'm left with the usual dilemma with 27d as to whether the definition is at the beginning or end of the clue. I can read it both ways which affects the (unched) 2nd letter of the answer.
Any votes for first or last on a postcard please!! :)
