Nice puzzle, and as so often the chance to learn about something new. However I can find only 4 words (14 letters) rather than 5 (17). The entity derived from the down clues' extra words certainly has only 4 words. Is the mystery 3-letter extra word to be found between the first two (sorry to be so elliptical)? That would at least make sense,

I get the same as you. I wondered if the work was also known with "the" in front, but I can't find any reference to that. I also only find the proper 4 words in the grid. Neither of her names has 3 letters, so it is a mystery to me.

A nice puzzle from which I also learned something new. I was in the same position as others re the 3 letter word until I spotted the relevant extra words in a couple of the down clues.

I have got the theme, shape and abbreviation but have no idea about the 5 words of 17 letters. Any hint would be appreciated.

Grunger, there's a famous historical boat tour that's been going to the location since 1846. The last three words of that are the last three words of the theme itself. The first word is another word meaning female. The fifth word is/was the slightly tricky one - that's the 'thematic individual'.

Thanks so much. Thats given me something to work on. I came across the boat when reading about adventures there, but did not realise she might be involved in the crossword.

Grunger, thanks. The boat itself isn't involved in the puzzle, but the last three words of its name are! If you put the first word in, there's a lot of useful information online on that four-word phrase - and that should lead you to the single, short word.

I had another hint, but felt it might be over-generous. Let me know if you need it!
