38a eldues me. I am confident that my checked letters are correct. Chambers lists four words which will fit, none of which I can parse. If I add my (unclued) answer for 25d (which I think is correct), there is nothing in Chambers which fits 38a. Would appreciate a nudge.

I think 38 A isn't in Chambers because it's a proper noun, a place (a rather exotic place, I'd never heard of it!) I haven't got my copy handy, but I think the parsing had straightforward bits that got me to the answer, most of the answer.

Thanks Malone! Once again, you got me over the line. Most solvers are probably unfamiliar with the proper noun answer and can only find it by parsing the clue correctly. I was misled by the fact that 3 of the 4 answers in Chambers which would fit (if one ignores the intersecting letter from 25d) are in a sense related to 'light'.

Bradford's lists the answer to 38a under the definition word's entry.

Helveticus, glad I could help.

Will37, thanks for that - I wasn't stuck enough to check Bradford's!

Sounds like one of those threads where things slowly click into place. Nice to hear the advice was actually useful for someone, even if it didn’t solve everything right away. And yeah, we’ve all been there, knowing there’s probably an answer somewhere but not quite desperate enough yet to dig through every possible source. Still, it’s always good when a quick nudge from someone else saves you a bit of extra head-scratching.

Thanks, SehagEvez, though I think my advice to Helveticus did lead to him solving that clue pretty much 'right away'.

Thanks to Will for the Bradfords reference. I had the answer but was interested to confirm.

I thought this, while not being too tricky, came together nicely.

I also note that Fieldfare in his guise as Imogen set Saturday’s Guardian prize. Not much crossover on this forum between Guardian and Spectator solvers… this despite many compilers (and the editor) setting for both publications.

I have everything including the gorge but can't find a word for 13 that indicates one who rebukes, or failing. I have ?N?B?ER and presumably nurse indicates the usual 2 letters ... am not blogging this week so not desperate, but annoyed.

Hi Prospero,
Nurse is fodder. Books is two letters (not the biblical ones).
