Trumpeter's ballad (8 letters) The answer should have some reference to first or last, but last post is 2 words. Could this answer be Reveille?

It could be, but a trumpeter is a large breed of swan, so how about “swansong”?

I think the reveille is sounded on a bugle, not a trumpet, technically, so bugler would have been more persuasive
