Answer is STYLUS but am I missing something on the parsing? Is it just a cryptic in the sense that a stylus enables a record to be heard? There must be more to it, surely?

For me, it’s unsatisfactory because clues like this usually rely on a superficially misleading surface in their normal reading. So if “record” naturally led one to think of something without equal, it might save it. Like “Love handles? (3,5) as a clue for “pet names”. But it doesn’t, and I don’t think the fact that a stylus was also used to create records on wax in Roman times, and is now used on digital devices, saves it.
