Speculative work discussed a couple of hypothetical variants (3-2).

Have an answer based on the crossers that kind of means speculative work, but can't see the wordplay?

In 18a I think the word play requires long year to be LY. Anyone seen this abbreviation for long year (or long) before?

Thanks

Psi, Phi both used to represent wave functions in quantum mechanics? I suppose these could be viewed as hypothetical variants. Open to other explanations.

LY standard for light year, never seen it for long year.

Hi SH,

I took it to be referring to Psi and Phi but I can't say I'm overly confident!

Thanks both. Given the following clue, that makes sense. 'Hypothetical variant' must mean a greek letter that can represent waves I guess?
