Once again my access to the online crossword is behind a paywall on my Macbook Pro, but is freely available on my iPad. Anyone else hit this apparent contradiction?

24d I think I've got the "hideous alter ego" solution but can't parse. Could someone help?

Key indicators are "on vacation" (2 outer letters of a word in the clue) and "starts to" (first letters of 2 words in the clue).

Happy new year all

I enjoyed this week’s crossword, even the Spoonerism!

I’ve just posted the following on the paywall forum, which I hope helps those with a library membership:

Through my library membership I can access Pressreader, and via this I can access the Observer online, including the New review supplement with the Everyman crossword.

Lots of libraries give free access to Pressreader, so it’s worth checking if yours does.

Can any one help me understand the parsing for the last three letters of 8 across? Thank you!

I believe you remove “a”, one, from nag, after the single letter abbreviation “o” for old. “a” for “one” does crop up from time to time

8a is a lovely clue - the 'up' misdirection!

I can't see how the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th letters satisfy 'Almost in pieces' in 18D.
