Hi Markeo,
Those two letters are, a single letter for “bold” (not supported by the dictionaries but it is used in html) followed by another single letter which is indicated by “bit of..” the word that follows.

Is the online version not free anymore - can't get any further than asking me to subscribe 🙄.

Me too. I can't access the interactive version. It is blocked by a message asking for subscription. I found I could access it on a different device with a different email address. So it looks like one can get a limited number of puzzles without subscribing.

Hi all and Happy New Year

I liked this, esp the spoonerism, but can’t get 23D, and I don’t really understand 14A. Hints appreciated

Thanks Everyman

Hi Barry,
In 23d Jacques is a reference to a French rhyme.
14a is just a double definition.

Happy New Year,
Sorry, Barry C, I can’t parse 23d either, but I have completed this satisfying and challenging crossword.
Can’t parse last word in 25a.
COD:22a.

Hi Nicola,
25 parses as 1,1,3,2. The last word is the 2 (think maths).
23 What is Jacques in the rhyme? Then move an E.
