Got a full grid and the hint in the top and bottom rows, but the end game has me stumped. The other four numbered rows contain appropriate anagrams of words relating to the hint, but each with an extra letter. A nudge would be appreciated.

Only the grey cells contain the appropriate anagrams, so the white cells in the middle contain the extra letter.

That is what I have done, and the extra letters could spell part of the wordplay for clue 28 - but still stumped.

Look at the first, last and middle columns - the extra letters that went into the white cells are involved in the "switching"

All done and enjoyed with the exception of final clue, 42: Liking discovery, keeping old cape (8 - with additional i in the wordplay). Hint appreciated so I can finally put this away.

Notnil, there's a usual (in crosswords) 'old' and an equally usual'cape'. These follow a four-letter 'discovery', which loses the letter you mentioned. The definition is 'liking', noun.
