Thanks for the info Korppi. I’ve set up another thread for Maskarade so as not to divert this one away from the Prize puzzle.

13 is common in US usage. Surprised that it's unknown in UK.

I’ve definitely heard it in press reporting over here. The HS2 “bat tunnel” comes to mind.

As usual I started late. At first, I thought I was doing well as I got 9ac straightaway and guessed a number of others quickly. Then there were others I struggled over and/or couldn't parse. I still have three left - 2d, 10ac and 21ac. I'm not sure I have the right answer to 17d. I may have the wrong tailless bird. So some hints would be helpful.

Brendan, I didn't know 13d either (despite having recently re-read Huckleberry Finn prior to reading James in January 2026) and shall try to use it often.

I was expecting a big crossword today and found it in the main paper, but decided not to tackle it today. I was very put off by the solution appearing upside down on the same page. I also hate it when the solutions aren't fully parsed. It may be a 13d.

I will be back

Hi, roof. For 2D it’s a two-letter word for live as a verb, forward, then backward. You should be able to get 10 once you get 2.

And 21 is a four-letter word for exploit as a noun followed by one for survey as in opinions. That should verify 17 for you.

Hi Darla

Thanks, I got 10ac straight away, which promptly gave me 2d. Coming to the forum often gets my brain going. Just 21ac to go.
