One last answer I can't parse:

I'm pretty sure the answer must be REALISE ... but why? I can see an 'L' in RAISE, but then there's a superfluous 'E'.

Can someone put me out of my misery please?

Of course! I'd got it into my head that 'started late' must mean 'L' and thus blinded myself to other options.
