Geeker, Norah won't care how the number appears in the Observer. She used to be a Text Processing Supervisor and has her own views about how many digits there should be before a comma is added and, spoiler alert, 4 is too few. 😂

You're right. I see that Inquisitor, Listener, TLS, Spectator, ... threads also have four-digit numbers with no comma.

I never noticed. 🤣 But I hardly ever try barred puzzles.

... in addition, I can virtually guarantee that she'll also remove 'No.', leaving just 'Everyman 4130'.

Geeker and Brendan

I’m flattered I rate several posts in the Everyman thread😇

The offending comma and word “No” number were removed at about 7.15am before I’d even read your email, Bren, or had my first cup of coffee😂

You are quite right about my aversion to commas, my principle on the Forum is no comma on 4 figure numbers, then commas are inserted from 10,000 upwards to make reading easier.

The word “No.” is totally superfluous as is “crossword”, they’re all crosswords apart from quizzes, when the word Quiz appears.

10d rather vague as to which vowel to use in the answer, lacking a crosser confirmation.

I think "victim, did you say?" makes it fairly clear which vowel is needed. Of course, I may be proved wrong when the answers come out!

Thanks Brendan! I think I’ve got it finally. Not quite grasping the first part of the clue. I hope this isn’t giving too much away, but does “duck” mean a specific letter that I take out (“leaving”) of “Rome”?
