1 Across: Whence man about town. 7 letters, ??B?R??

I think the answer is SUBURBS (about town), but can't understand the word play.

I think the whole clue is a cryptic definition. Where would you find a man about a town… in the suburbs.

SUBURBS fits.

Wordplay: man about town = S (abbrev. for “son”/person) about URB (Latin for town/city) + S → SUBURBS.
