The “pranksters” were new to me. Thanks to Pomfret Cake for the introduction and for an enjoyable, if challenging, workout.

Got stuck when I chose the wrong meddler for 44a. Thanks to ozzy for the hint! All done now, what a great puzzle.

I am finding this so frustrating. I have filled in a large part of the grid including three of the meddled with clues but still no idea about who the pranksters are. Can some kind soul give me a pointer to what I should be looking for.
