Apart from the hinting at the theme, I assumed it was contrived to serve its hidden purpose!

I think it alludes to the Shropshire village mentioned in the first line of the preamble. But it also hides something thematic

I'm finally crawling over the line with this puzzle, but I can't parse 9a.
Boo! Train's genuine torment for one who used to commute (7)
I have the answer as the last 4 words, and also the entry.

^ That should be the last 5 words, of course.

I think the answer is the person who was famous for commuting verbally, and the clue is an example. True bane?

Exactly so. I replied from memory, and forgot it had been further modified. Glad you got there

I’m doing well, know the theme - full grid except for a few at the bottom. Need help with 46a. Not helped by 26d, which I was sure ended DOOR, but that clashes with 43a!

You are not wrong about 26d, but note that it could be altered before entry.

Standard "old" and "american" go(ing) after a 3 letter big shot inside a 3-letter verb meaning row (row, row your boat)
