Huge thanks to Vismut. I loved this. A perfect antidote to a dreary Sunday.

I second that. Excellent puzzle and the alphabetical grid fill was happily free of ambiguities. Not my subject but even I knew of the deceased thematic character.

Hello again all.
I need some help with the very last bit of this most excellent puzzle.

I have fitted everything in, drawn in the thematic line and got four unclued answers.

But I am afraid I am struggling with the last bit of the preamble.
"Second letters of these clues when read in the correct clue order give an instructions to reveal the remaining contestant..."

Is the "remaining contestant" the one whose epitaph it is ? If so, I can see how to change things.....but it does not seem right to me .

Or am I barking up the wrong tree again?

Thanks for any help.

Fred, it sounds like you’re spot on. I think when you read the message in the clues in the order the answers are entered in the grid, it says “change one letter in c***** name”. That gives you the contestant, and then you can draw a horseshoe through his final resting place. As you say, a lovely puzzle. And right in my wheelhouse. I didn’t even need to look up the other contestants. Makes a nice change!
