I had to re-read the preamble before I realised that "tried" in 9d wasn't an extra word but an affected word.

I too went down the Simpsons rabbit hole for a while. I was vaguely aware of the true theme but needed a wiki synopsis to get me into the endgame. Thanks to Ploy for an interesting challenge - and for leading me up the garden path!
