I’ve a complete grid with one of the characters erased twice and the adjusted form in place. But I haven’t a clue why, or who the other character is. A pointer would be welcome, lest sleep prove elusive.

I thought it was a generic term, rather than a specific name. On the opposite side to the one you have.

But I haven’t watched it and don’t intend to!

If you have the work, wiki describes the encounter. But Ican only find the other character in a zig-zg , so I think I'm still missing something.

I believe you change the middle three of an existing answer reading down from the top of the grid. It becomes what you’ve previously removed, after performing the original existing answer, and creates real words

I’m no expert on the theme, jockie, and it wasn’t what I was looking for either following my reading of Wikipedia. I’m certainly open to better ideas …

Held up by several clues towards the SE corner for a long time. Now got a full grid with both characters identified and one of them twice removed and relocated, My problems are that I do not know the name of the work of fiction and my four extra words don't seem to make much sense. The sum of the relevant clue numbers is 76.

Gitto, the sum of the relevant numbers should be 79, and in order of appearance in the thematic phrase they are 4, 2, 1, 3
