I've been staring at this last one all week, but I still can't parse it. Help, please?

17d Striking network operator joined European nobleman (7)

?R?N?E?

I have a nobleman, and the last letter, but can't see how the clue gives the rest.

Could it be that the first five letters give a synonym for 'striking' (impressive, not hitting) and the last two give the major network operator, mobile phones?

I think that’s correct and European is part of the definition, Chambers says “ a noble (Spain and Portugal from the 13c) “
