There seem to be two possibilities the second word in the sequence, that is the unchecked letters could go in either order. Or have I gone wrong somewhere?

Jon, I make the unchecked letters _A_E, unless I am wrong - M

Agree, but is TERA not valid?

Not sure Tera is a complete word, BRB gives it only as a prefix...

Enjoyed this. Better than the average Doc. Some neat clues and no “options” which have been creeping in lately.

This might be the first Spectator crossword I've attempted and I enjoyed it (apart from several words that were unknown to me), which surprised me because I don't normally like weird rules like unclued lights.
Couple I can't parse:

39a Area occupied by some flustered foreigners (6)
R?G?O? - thought I'm not certain about the 'G'. Region?

5d Fundamentalist army replace subhuman's head with time (7)
Looks like 'Taliban'.

5D. Caliban was the subhuman, remove his head, first letter, and replace it with T, time, for Taliban, fundamentalist army.
39 An anagram, (flustered) of part of (some) 'foreigners'

Thanks Malone, haven't come across Caliban. Also not sure if I've seen a clue which the anagram fodder is as unclear as it was in 39.
