I am trying to do the last clue on a Times puzzle from the 1980s and I'm stuck. The letters I have are: E - I - G - L and and the clue is "Church body rejected member backing this doctrine."

I assume it ends with GEL because LEG would be a member backwards but I am still stuck. Simply cant think of a word that fits.

I think your 'i' is wrong. Evangel would work, for doctrine - and it's Nave, church body/area, reversed (rejected) and Leg, backing, reversed too.

Looks like EVANGEL. Are you sure about your ā€œIā€ ?

I see EVANGEL is clearly right. I was just being sloppy. I put in AUDITORIUM (which gave me the I) wrongly when It ought to have been SUDATORIUM.
