I think your 'u' might need to be a 'y'

I have a 4 letter word for 'to unite with', ending in y , followed by L for Liberal, definition is radical

Lumen, there is an extra letter in the first word of 35d. It’s tricky. One of the Heavenly Twins loses a logic circuit, or gate, from its end

Virtually full grid now.
But many I have the entries for I can't parse, so I am a way off the thematic stuff still.

Got theme etc. All done now except first cell of 14a. I believe two letters are removed from final word but still can't see it.

Aye lumen, 2 letters removed, leaving a 4 letter word beginning with T, which can then be abbreviated by T.

The 2 removed letters then give you the beginning of the first thematic word, 6 letters long.

The T is preceded by a three letter word, quite common, which means 'according to'. The resulting entry is an old/rather obscure word which meant objectionable, I think LOL!

.......and which has a rather diffetent meaning nowadays!
