A couple I've been unable to parse this week:

8d Wearing jewellery, returned to island (7)
The solution is 'tiaraed' which you can get from reversing 'dear' and 'ait'. So are we saying that 'dear' is a synonym for 'to' or have I missed something?

28d Less drunk, retrospectively screen missing diamonds for bishop (7)
S*B*R*R.
Well it must be 'soberer' but I've no idea how this one works. Any suggestions out there?

8d as you might start a letter .. Dear Ait, To Ait

28d in reverse D replacing B gives ‘reredos’, a screen (in a Church).

The second one is REREDOS (a screen in a church) backwards, with B replacing D.

I agree that TO doesn't seem to give DEAR

Reredos would be the screen( in church, I think), swap the D for Diamonds for B for Bishop. Retrospectively, reverse.

8d dear as in letter writing, check to in Chambers.
28d screen = reredos, replace the d with b then reverse.

There weren't any replies when my solitary finger started meandering the keyboard.

Wow, what a response! Thanks everyone. I thought that 'to' must be related to 'dear' as in letter-writing but it seemed a bit weak. As for 'reredos', I should have spotted that in my 'Bradford's' but somehow missed it. Ah well.
