Morning Bren
I’d be interested to know what the unusual spelling was that you encountered, as I wasn’t held up by one and am therefore wondering whether I’ve gone wrong (though I’ve already submitted my solution)!

Hi Rog, my guess would be 8a, which wasn’t a familiar variant to me either.

Phil #9 Is it too much of a hint to share the rhyming pair clue numbers. Either I’ve gone horribly wrong or I’m being particularly dumb and can’t spot it. Many thanks

Nuno - look down ... for as long as possible.

I got into a terrible pickle with 1a , obsessed with Roman numerals and had never heard of the 8a variant. Is it à variant spelling or just a variant? Otherwise very Everyman, so thanks for the puzzle

Hi Arib, it’s just a variant. Chambers describes it as “particularly thin”.
I also went down the LIV rabbit hole.

Hi Rog,

It wasn't so much the spelling rather the actual word. Like I said in my post, it's obvious what word it's a variant of, plus I dated a Sicilian for a couple of years (way to sterotype Bren!) but can honestly say I've never heard of it before.

Greetings all
I've got 6D wrong or I can't understand the parsing. Any help gratefully received.
Cheers on a gloomy UK day

6d read from the bottom up as 3,4. “Bass?” is used simply as an example of a fish.
