Thanks to eXternal for an entertaining work out. Those who remember the early 1970s will probably get the theme quite quickly! I’m impressed by the way final changes still leave real words!

Graham9perkins, I enjoyed this one too but it took a fair bit of Googling to find out what the first five superfluous words had to do with the rest. The title helped! A nice symmetry among the clues helped to identify the ones with extra words.

I think I have made the correct alterations and everything seems to hang together. I cannot fathom the significance of the first five superfluous words (i do know the original reference). I am guessing they words can also be interpreted cryptically. Could somebody point me in the right direction?

a "fair bit of Googling" seems to indicate that the first 5 words have bdcome sort of an unofficial theme song for the "sport" depicted.

As the superfluous words emerged I was increasingly baffled. But it all made sense by the time they had all stacked up and the endgame wrapped up very tidily. Thank you eXternal.

So near and yet so far! I think I've done everything except the very last instruction which has defeated me. I think it's made up of three words which begin with S, U and W respectively?

I don’t have the puzzle with me, but from memory there were five thematic items. Four needed to be altered in accordance with the overall theme. The one which was left standing needed to be highlighted. I think that’s what the three words signify.

If I’ve misremembered I’m sure someone will correct me

Yes, there were 5 items. The first instruction strictly speaking applied to the “parents” of 4 of the items and the second did indeed mean highlight (or “s”) the last one of the “parents”, which is otherwise unaffected by the first instruction.
