Hello everyone. Please can anyone help with 23a?

What would make goose go in trap? (5)

I have N - O - E

It looks like NOOSE (= trap), but how does the parsing work?

To make goose into go you would need no ose

Not a puzzle I do but if you read noose as two words, that would result in “goose” becoming “go”.

Thanks both. But is OSE even a word (and if it is, what does it mean)? I can't find it in my edition of Chambers.

I think you just need to think of O S E as a sequence of letters not necessarily a word.

It’s in Chambers as a suffix. But as Bugs Bunny was wont to say, “let’s not split hares”. (I’ll get my coat….)
