Could I please ask for guidance on 1a?

Religious ascetic shivered, losing some energy going round (7)

I thought shivered might have meant ANAGRAM, but ascetic can’t be made into anything.

Ascetic is part of the definition. “Going round” is the anagram indicator (you need to remove one E)…

If you are looking for a way in, the long one down the middle is also an anagram.
