Thanks Malone. But interestingly, it doesn't seem to work both ways. In my edition of Bradford's, AGE is not listed under the entry for DAY - which might suggest that they aren't totally synonymous.

TheMadWoman... thanks, that was interesting. I went off to look at the big guns, ie the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary. Under 'Day' one of the thirteen definitions is 'a period, a time, an era' - so the clue still seems fine to me ( an age is definitely a period, a time, an era).
