Hi folks, I'm struggling to parse two clues from an old Daily Mail crossword:

Two consecutive letters fool continent, perhaps - LAND MASS
and
Two alternative letters are standard - NORM

L and M are the consecutive letters folloed by ASS for 'fool'

Sorry, didn't see the second clue:-

N or (as in 'alternative) M = N or M
