I also trembled at the prospect of some complex mathematical problem - and then realised what an hilarious finale Cranberry had in store. Great stuff!

Rare inquisitor for me, but very much enjoyed it.

Three loose ends that I'd appreciate tidying up:

3d - I assume the unches are i and s but the definition seems a stretch and I can't see the wordplay?

19a - I have a 3 word phrase that is fully checked by crossers and fits the wordplay, but can't see how it means pipe down?

39a - can see the definition, cant see the wordplay

Thanks

Hi smellyharry I no longer have the puzzle (deleted from my laptop) but I've pulled my worksheet out of recycling.
3d if I remember correctly "plastered?" was part of the clue, so if someone is in plaster they're normally in a cast, gie (a judo costume) in cast].
19a both mean "be quiet"
39a german for time is zeit round (presentatio)n giving the Russian football team Zenit (St Petersburg) usually just Zenit.

Thanks both. 39 makes sense now, can just about live with 3 although i'd never have figured that out.

Never heard of 19 meaning that, means the exact opposite as far as I'm concerned.
