I felt like Piet Mondrian when I'd finished this,

When it came to the highlighting, I could feel Brendan's presence hovering over my coloured pencils...

I'm glad my spectre was in attendance Malone. As soon as I read the preamble and saw the reference to shading I knew I was in for a treat.

I've been busy today so have had put it aside until Monday. This works out well as a work such as this deserves a new set of colouring pens, which I can pick up from the craft shop tomorrow.

No doubt I'll be back here periodically looking for help, the switching of some definitions sounds particularly tricky.

Thnaks, Brendan - and I know you like any excuse to treat yourself to new colouring pens!

I found the puzzle much easier than anticipated, but then again I tend to not bother with pesky stuff such as definitions, wordplay and so on - an answer is an answer to me. I had the occasional shrug, lifting of an eyebrow, but nothing to slow me down too much.

Thanks to Luxor for an entertaining, ultimately colourful (and not too taxing) puzzle. I too thought how much this would appeal to Brendan! And it caused me to reflect for a moment on just how many such odd couples there are….

If we highlight the odd couples in different shades, what do we do when two unmatched lights cross each other? Blend the colours?

Since I used green, I couldn't feel like Mondrian.

I interpreted (perhaps wrongly knowing me) 'different shades' as 'different colours' and blended those in the clashes.

For what it is worth, I went for a diagonal arrangement including both colours in the affected cells. But I suspect that was the shading equivalent of appalling pedantry!

Well, after an absolutely hectic week, I finally was able to make time for this tonight.

My earlier trepidation resulting from the preamble was, thankfully, misguided and I fairly tore through it in seemily no time at all.

There were a cuple of 'erring rouges that took a bit of navigating and in at least one instance Chambers confirms that the 'pop icons' can be preceded by 2 of the across themed words.

When it came to the colouring, it will surprise nobody that produced the most visually appealing representation possible. I invariably follow this course regardless of the instructions in the preamble, unless there's a requirement that is essential for the final picture.

In the end I went with a shocking pink, lime green, deep red, mauve, bright yellow and a midnight blue:-).

Perfect 😃
