A letter or word may or may not need to be removed before solving.

40a - Adorn with knobs edges of baroque seat, at intervals (6)

I have the answer and what I think is an extra word, and can see how the first 4 letters come from "edges of baroque seat", but how do the last 2 come fron "at intervals"? I can't even find them as a word in Chambers.

Edges of baroque give 1st 2 letters; "set at intervals" the last 4, A extra

That's great, many thanks Buddy.

I'd convinced myself that "knobs" was extra and, once I got that in my head, just couldn't see past it.

Thanks to Skylark for a pleasant diversion on an absolutely foul wet day. Brought back some memories - J’accuse!

Brought back memories to me too but I can’t get 1a. So once again I’m appealing for a nudge. Clue reads: Old London club recalling coral policy (6) C is the letter to be removed. I have only one letter I’m happy with. ???C??

Answer is the reverse of a homophone of a word meaning "policy", or if you want to start a debate, "strategy". I googled something likely given my crossers and got a hit.

Also, if you have the theme as regards the completed grid this should tell you the first 4 letters

Thank you buddy. I had that answer but couldn’t parse it until you explained. I still can’t parse 2d. But never mind. I’m grateful always for help here!
