It could be BADE - invited, round RIG - cook, as in "cook the books"? Not convinced.

Chambers gives "A band of people more or less organized for a specific purpose" so I think BRIGADE fits the bill perfectly

Chambers thesaurus supports rig = cook, as in tamper with; cook defined as "To manipulate for any purpose, or falsify". Seems OK.
