Hi everybody,
in my quest for old Genius crosswords, I am stuck on number 35, which can be found on the Guardian website, but minus the special instructions :

https://www.theguardian.com/crosswords/2006/may/01/genius-crossword-35

Most of the time I manage to solve a few clues and work out the instructions backwards. But some puzzles really do puzzle me.
Number 35 is one of them.

Thank you in advance for any help with the instructions.
Have a great week.
Manu

Thanks Manu, will take a look.
Others have tackled these early puzzles before. I recall no.13 was particularly challenging in the absence of a preamble.

In case anyone is tempted to search, note that the 225 blogs only start from no.44.

Thanks Jono,

there have been a few threads about old Geniuses. I started some of them. And I have to say they proved very useful thanks to the help of my fellow solvers. I hope this will be the case once more.

Thank you for your time.

I won’t be helping this time, Jono. I’ve been the main contributor to these historical threads, but while Manu is unfailingly polite, he never offers any of the fruit of his own labour, and expects everyone else to volunteer it freely. So we’re forced to start from square one. Not a game I’m prepared to play anymore, even though I have a few ideas on this one. So I wish you luck!

Jono, curiosity got the better of me and I did do this. It all works out nicely, but it’s quite challenging until you see what’s going on. If you’re interested I’ll send you my wording of the preamble tomorrow, and how I worked it out. No problem if not!

Thanks Quisling, I admit it defeated me yesterday though I didn’t spend too much time on it.
Interested to hear how you went about it. You can use my email which is in the Spectator 2699 thread if you wish.
