Please can anyone help with these?

10a: Place with fighting men in space base? (5)

I have E?B?D

It looks like EMBED (= place), but how does the rest of it work?

20a: Selfish move for one Conservative in case (10)

I have ?G?C?N?R?C

EGOCENTRIC (= selfish)? If so, why?

I think the first one is "Place with fighting men", as reporters sometimes are. EM is the (printers') space, though I don't see why BED is "base".

Yes embed is defined as planting a journalist with a military unit in Chambers

bed and base can be synonymous as in the bottom of something

Move is GO and that replaces onE C in ECCENTRIC (a “case”) to give EGOCENTRIC

Thanks. A bit convoluted, I think!

I thought the clue for Egocentric was good, very clever!

Agree for the most part but the vagueness of translating case to eccentric rather spoils it.

No vagueness involved for this solver. My parsing had "case" as a synonym for an eccentric (person)

However, on chambers online it is referenced only as "case = an odd character" as the 8th possible meaning of the 2nd entry.

The word eccentric refers to people who are only a subset of people who are odd characters: I would say that is a pretty vague link. I didnt say invalid, just vague enough for it to "rather spoil" the clue for me.

As an aside, I personally don't love solutions that rely on crossword ready lists of synonyms; these are rather self-referencing and contribute to a feeling that insider knowledge is required to solve. The "Never would have come up with that myself but it is in my Bradford's!" solution. Just my view.

We can agree to disagree.
