All done save for the last step of inserting one entry number. I'm inclined to put it in the cell which contiguously precedes the name to be highlighted but can't see the relevance of doing so.

There is a long lineage there - which number was he?

In my view it should be the first cell of the name to be highlighted. That was their number in the sequence, (they were the nth to hold that position) and is the number of the clue if you insert entry numbers for the whole grid

Many thanks to you both. Doing as quisling says makes perfect sense.

quisling, that is what I put in originally but then I thought but it made more sense to have it at the start of the title and this is the nth clue if I have counted right.

Sorry, Ionexch, when I said name I did mean title, as in the whole nine-letter unclued entry. I agree that’s the nth clue. I also thought that for the letter to drop vertically the contiguous highlighting cannot be a straight line, i.e. it does not move NW-SE to the end.

Quisling, all clear - apart from the letter. Again I was pretty sure it was it was the letter that dropped from the diagonal. However there is the also same letter at the bottom of the column where it could fit thematically so I am in two minds..

There’s one at the bottom but it wouldn’t be contiguous. So I went with the smaller drop, which would be both vertical, i.e. due south, and contiguous.

You could argue that it falls down the highlighted name if it goes NW-SE, but a) it’s a stretch to call it vertical, and b) the highlighting would then be a straight line. I would thought the preamble would have said that if it meant that. Contiguous usually meant connected but not straight, in my book

Quisling, not an issue with contiguous and the 11 highlighted cells would have indeed be the name. However I can't understand why there then needs to be a letter circled that has dropped vertically and the character involved has lost something . Maybe I am reading too much into it.

The character was the last in Britain to meet a particular fate. Apologies if that’s not what you were querying
